Important Notice - Dates for your Diary
As the shops move full steam ahead with their version of Christmas cheer, the Church is also preparing for its greatest event - the birth of Jesus Christ. In the church's calendar, it is called Advent, which means 'the beginning of an event' or 'the arrival of a person'. Advent is the start of our Christian calendar, the 4 weeks before Christmas when it is recommended we take time to prepare ourselves.
Here in St John's we have marked this season for many, many years by hosting a Community Carol Service at the beginning of December. Here is your 'wellbeing' opportunity to listen to or sing a selection of well loved Christmas Carols. Nothing is more relaxing than singing Carols in the peaceful setting of St John's (rather than having them forced upon you in crowded shops). In between, the story of the first Christmas will be read by people from the community.
After the service, you are invited to St John's Hall for a cuppa and a chat.
**Put the date in your diary - Sunday 1st December, 2024 at 7.00pm**
If you have not been with us before, make this year different.
St John's and All Saints'
While our two churches are places of welcome, they are completely different architecturally.
St John's is a plain building on a site associated with Christian worship for over 1300 years and All Saints' is an ornate building provided by Arthur Guinness, Lord Ardilaun.
Or if Facebook is not you, follow us on Instagram to find out more about how church worship can make a difference to your everyday life. As our Lord said
Come and see!
"May the Peace of the Lord be always with you"
Why Come to church on Sundays?
In the Book of Common Prayer, which contains the liturgy used by the Church of Ireland, it tells us that we "come together in the name of Christ" for 5 main reasons:
- to offer our praise and thanksgiving
- to hear and receive God’s holy word,
- to seek forgiveness of our sins,
- and to pray for the needs of the world,
- by the power of the Holy Spirit we may give ourselves to the service of God.
As our Lord said - Come and see.
Hymn Singing
Congregational singing has always formed an important ingredient in Church of Ireland worship. We use hymns each week for praise and prayer. A combination of traditional and modern verse, music and community provides a feeling of well-being. Singing is not a requisite, but if you like congregational singing, here is your chance. The church has many copies of The Irish Church Hymnal - Melody Edition for use by the congregation.
